Welcome to Bootcamp! The Fashion Law Institute is pleased to offer a unique annual Summer Intensive Program, fondly known as Fashion Law Bootcamp, an opportunity to experience the newly defined field of fashion law outside of the regular law school curriculum.
This summer our 3rd annual Fashion Law Bootcamp will introduce you to the substance of style, with emphasis on current business and legal issues involving the global fashion industry. Classroom sessions are scheduled from May 21 to May 31, 2013, 6:00-9:15 P.M. weekdays (exclusive of Memorial Day, May 27). Participants will also have the opportunity to meet one another and the industry insiders who serve as program faculty at additional events including an opening reception and a closing dinner.
Participants attending Bootcamp will explore diverse areas that affect the fashion industry and are at the heart of the Fashion Law Institute, including intellectual property, business and finance, international trade and government regulation, and consumer culture and civil rights. Within these categories, specific topics include the protection of fashion designs, counterfeiting, licensing agreements, fashion financing, garment district zoning, real estate, employment issues from designers to models, consumer protection, sustainability and green fashion, import/export regulations, sumptuary laws, and dress codes.
The program is run by Professor Susan Scafidi, Founder and Academic Director of the Institute, who pioneered the field of fashion law. She is the first professor to create a course in the area – covering the same material as Fashion Law Bootcamp – and is internationally recognized for her expertise. The program will also feature guest lecturers from the fashion industry.
Fashion Law Bootcamp is open to law students, lawyers, fashion industry professionals, and others in the U.S. and abroad who are interested in broadening their knowledge of the law and business of fashion. The program is an excellent way for fashion industry professionals to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the legal issues that they deal with on a regular basis, or for practicing lawyers to expand their current practice or even jump start a change in career. Individuals who have not yet had academic or practical exposure to the law and business of fashion, including design students and other undergraduates entering their final year of study, are eligible to apply but must have a demonstrated scholastic aptitude and willingness to take on the challenge of studying legal materials. While there are no specific prerequisites to the program and this is an introductory-level course, reading cases and engaging in legal analysis will be required.
CREDITS
Law students: Up to 2.0 law school credits (if granted by your home institution).
Lawyers: Both newly admitted and experienced attorneys will receive a maximum of 28 transitional and non-transitional, professional practice New York State CLE credits.

The American campus has been permanently altered by the increase in students with significant mental health issues who are now able to attend colleges and universities because of the gain made in pharmacological treatment and therapy as well as a cultural shift in the stigma associated with serious mental illness and developmental and psychological disorders. Oftentimes students and their families find themselves lost in the maze of the campus community and needing assistance with health care, mental health, substance abuse or related services. Unfortunately, too often these campus issues move from the clinical to the legal in the multiple contexts of student or judicial affairs, medical leave mandates, campus safety concerns as seen in recent college campus events around the country, misinterpretation of symptoms and treatments, and lack of adequate professional training to equip college and university professionals and staff with the skills necessary to deal with student life crises. Although families may have utilized high school counselors and consultants to assist in getting their child into the college of their choice, those services end at the high school doors, and no one of that experience or expertise follows the family onto the higher education campus to assist with services, interventions, advice and guidance.
Attorneys who practice in the areas of health care, mental health, education law and related concentrations, as well as interdisciplinary professionals, can learn from this program including the current state of the law in this area, the laws governing higher education, confidentiality, legal options in health care and mental health matters on a campus, legal resources in representing clients with these issues, the integration of legal and clinical aspects of these matters, on and off-campus legal and clinical services and coordination of on and off-campus legal staff when representing these clients. Knowledge of the clinical issues and legal options available to assist clients in these cases can go a long way in negotiating and finalizing a solution in the best interests of students, their families and college and university communities.

Registration on the day of the program will open at 8:30 am. Those who are also pre-registered must report to the registration desk before the program begins. Lunch: A boxed lunch (sandwich, chips, and soda) will be provided for those who preregister for the program.
CLE CREDIT IS AVAILABLE: This conference is appropriate for newly admitted and experienced attorneys and is approved for a maximum of 7 transitional and non-transitional credit hours according to the following allocation: 2 skills, 2 ethics, and 3 professional practice ($185 CLE, $125 CLE for Fordham alumni, public interest attorneys, and academicians)
This CLE credit allocation is approved in accordance with the requirements of the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board. To determine whether another state will award credit, please contact the CLE administrator’s office for that particular state.
