As the Force Commander of the U.N. Mission for Rwanda during the 1994 genocide General Dallaire urgently requested support from the U.N. that, if heeded, could have halted the genocide. General Dallaire is now a Senator in the Canadian Parliament.

The Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative (The Initiative) is a global partnership committed to ending the use and recruitment of child soldiers worldwide through ground-breaking research, advocacy and security-sector training such as the five-year program the Initiative is presently presenting in Sierra Leone.

The film Fight Like Soldiers Die Like Children, inspired by General Dallaire’s book, chronicles the journey of General Dallaire back to Africa on his mission to end the use of child soldiers.

The Silent Majority - A 25 Year Retrospective

The Feerick Center invites you to attend a lecture to be delivered by the Honorable Victor Marrero of the United States District Court (SDNY) entitled “Pro Bono Legal Services: The Silent Majority—A 25 Year Retrospective” which will take place at Fordham Law School on Thursday, June 27 at 5:30 PM in Room 304. This is one of the Center’s many ways of creating awareness and dialogue about social justice issues in the legal community.

Twenty-five years ago Judge Marrero was appointed by the then Chief Judge of New York State to act as chair of a “Committee to Improve the Availability of Legal Services.” The Committee included many leading members of the bench and bar including former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, US Attorney Robert Fiske, Ellen Futter, the President of Barnard and currently the American museum of Natural History, several bar association presidents and lawyers from throughout the state.

The main recommendation of that Committee was to propose “that all lawyers admitted to practice and registered as attorneys in New York be required to provide a minimum of 40 hours of qualifying pro bono legal services every two years.”

That proposal was not implemented and as a quarter century has now passed, Judge Marrero suggested that this might be an appropriate time to review that Report and the current state of the availability of legal services.

A Response to Judge Marrero’s lecture will be presented by Catherine A. Christian, who is the former president of the New York County Lawyers’ Association and is currently an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office.

All of the original members of the Committee that made the proposal have been invited to the lecture and several have indicated that they intend to be present. Also invited and expected to attend are the two most recent Chief Judges of New York State.

The Stein Center for Law and Ethics and the Fordham Law Review are sponsoring The Legal Profession's Monopoly on the Practice of Law, a one-day colloquium on October 18, 2013 at Fordham Law School.

The legal profession’s monopoly on the practice of law continues to raise a host of ethical, practical and theoretical questions. What are the unique challenges to the unauthorized practice of law in the age of e-lawyering and web-based legal services? Are new approaches to fee-splitting, advertising and attorney-client relationships needed in the internet age? What, if any, lessons can we learn from new international models of alternative business structures? What is the relationship between lawyers’ monopoly and insufficient access to legal services? Is a new response needed by educational institutions to the expansion of law-related work by non-lawyers? The colloquium will bring together scholars who are thinking about these and other issues from various perspectives, with the aim of collectively grappling with these difficult and timely questions.
