8:50 AM - 5:00 PM CRT/Empirical Methods Conference
Critical Race Theory (CRT) has been an influential aspect of legal scholarship on race and inequality for roughly 20 years, but its methodology has been largely literary. The motivation behind this symposium is the idea that the important issues raised by CRT could benefit substantially from greater integration with social science methods that can quantitatively and qualitatively measure the phenomena brought to light by Critical Race insights. At the same time, the sometimes less- than-robust theories used to motivate empirical research on race also could benefit from CRT’s theoretical sophistication.

The symposium will bring together scholars from law, the humanities, and the social sciences to critically engage and articulate the previously unexplored confluences between empirical studies of race and identity, and doctrinal/ critical work on the topic.
